- ISO 4017 / DIN 933: thread runs to the underside of the hex head (or nearly). There is no usable unthreaded shank for grip.
- ISO 4014 / DIN 931: a smooth shank sits under the head; threads start after a defined thread length. The shank diameter is close to the major thread diameter.
- If the print lists thread length b shorter than length L, you almost certainly need 4014. If it says “fully threaded” or L is short enough that b ≈ L, you need 4017.
